I believe Milton Friedman already said that immigration pays off as long as it’s illegal. Otherwise you have to provide them with all social benefits etc..
Generally speaking, highly qualified immigration is nearly always a big boon. Illegal immigration can be a boon or a burden, depending on the scope, on how much they're integrated into the workforce and on how many services and social benefits they end up receiving in spite of their undocumented status. What is always a huge burden are low-qualification immigrants (doesn't matter if legal or illegal) coming into countries which grant them easy access to their welfare state. Canada and Europe have taken in far too many immigrants of the latter type over the past decade.
This is what Milton Friedman's famous quote gets at: in the long run, you cannot maintain (functionally) open borders and a generous welfare state. If you try to have both at the same time, you will attract droves of persons who will be net drains on society. Then, sooner or later, either the border will have to be closed or the welfare state be razed.
