Trump's been the Republican nominee for president 3 cycles in a row and Republicans who go against him lose their jobs. He's as Republican as it gets. Republican isn't an ideology, it's a political party, so the fact that he's not conservative or a Reaganite doesn't really matter.


I firmly disagree that it doesn't really matter. Trump hopped onto the Republican bandwagon for one reason only: to win. He doesn't care about the party itself. If Hillary Clinton had been a Republican, Trump would've ended up being a Democrat. I am registered as a Republican but have not voted for Trump once and never will.

Well, something turned the tide for Trump in 2010-2011.
He had primarily donated and supported all Democrats until 2010-2011 and then all of a sudden he changed to all Republican and hasn’t supported or donated to democratic party once since then. That may have been in prep to run in 2016 though…

Trump has been relatively consistent in the issues he actually cares about, like protectionism and deregulation. He was giving speeches about how Japan was eating our lunch back when it was Japan eating our lunch. He never gave a shit about moralizing social policy. He pandered to the christian right when he needed to, but he personally paid for enough abortions to depopulate a small town- and see how it paid off for them with Roe v Wade. Political parties being about affiliation, not ideology, is not just an observation of their reality, its also the self reinforcing source of their power.

The democratic party got seized by the unholy marriage of radical social activists, regressive islamists and too big to fail bankers/corporations/military industrial complex and the selfinterested neoliberal politicians under their patronage. None of these subsets aligned with Trump ideologically and they all turned out to align against him politically. Why the devil would Trump, who spent his whole life crusading about how we're shipping jobs overseas to our detriment, go suckle at that same mammon's teat? He bent the republicans to his will and forcibly turned them from a party vaguely associated with fat cat corporate interests into a populist working class party that would sooner eat the rich, because at least those sentiments already existed among Republicans and the time was ripe for them to take control.
