How many presidencies can the MAGA crowd rule the party without delivering on midwest, rust belt and bible belt economic growth? that's what won it for Trump. people in communities torn apart by outsourcing and automation that were told jobs would return. maybe excuses will last a bit, but they wont forever.
But that's the thing: the economy was pretty great from 2017 through early 2020, those were the years when the largest real wage gains were made post-2010, particularly for the lower percentiles of the income distribution and in less economically strong regions of the country. We can debate about the degree to which Trump contributed to this, as opposed to him just getting lucky with the timing of the economic recovery from the Great Recession (which reached MAGA country last), but the takeaway is that a lot of his base feel like he delivered for them on the economy... until a conglomerate of Democrats, technocrats, journalists and elites intentionally and needlessly fucked it all up with the covid lockdowns.
So the way I see it, Trump and his brand of populism have already earned quite some credit with his base on economic policy, hence, it would take a long streak of stagnation/decline before they turn on trumpism for economic reasons.
