The point is that California's politics have shifted so far to the left over the past 30 years that Feinstein, by virtue of staying in place on the issues, became a moderate or even right-of-center politician, at least by the lopsided California standards. Had she stepped down earlier, California would have been guaranteed a decidedly more progressive senator in her place.
