Is it really a problem beyond optics? The money supply is fake, so Pentagon wasting it doesn't concern me, but perhaps an indication inflation well beyond reconciling. I'm more concerned when real assets are wasted. Things like munitions to Ukraine. Apache helicopters and IP design prints to Saudi. Billions annually to Israel, etc. Cost prohibitive next gen equipment.
They fail an audit, gasp, but their operating policy is waste and obscure to begin with. Military need consolidate it's assets and fix manufacturing lines to rearm.
Well when trillions of vanishing without a trace it impacts everyone's lives including your own. I am not working to pay some shady army spook to use my money for their own personal pet projects which are likely to involve starting wars and be less secure.
Yes money is fake but we end up paying it with our sweat and tears and real physical goods including land. Inflation takes away purchasing power and causes debt to pile up.
It eventually translates to physical goods and services. Either way it's a massive drag on society. Imagine that money going towards free healthcare, cheap food, affordable housing etc.
