i legit didnt see that story, its just when i hear "landslide POTUS win" my brain slides to Reagan.
realistically i doubt that swung the election to a loss for carter. Hurt him for sure, but when it was 489-49 EC vote its hard to see a path to 270 for Carter even if Iran released the hostages and paid the US a few billion $ with a public announcement "we did this purely because of Carter, he made this happen". Carter just could not stand on a stage with Reagan and maintain likeability in the face of the juggernaut. I detest Reagan's politics, and Nanci basically acted as POTUS for him for years in his second term which is a serious scandal, but the dude was dynamite politically in that era.
funny that the people who worship Reagan also cry about Biden's mental decline. Reagan was basically a vegetable by the end.
This. The part about the landslide at least. We can drum up what-if scenarios about swift boats, or willie horton, or butterfly ballots, or hillarys emails. Close elections, straw that broke the camels back, whatever. But Reagan was about as far ahead as Cassius Clay fighting Steven Hawking. We can debate the legality and ethics and precedent Reagan set with the Iranian hostages, but he was obviously winning either way.
If anything the fallout just shows how demented it was when Democrats tried to find anything to stick to Trump and went with 'Trump Jr listened to a bogus claim by Magnitsky-Adoption lobbyists' and 'Trump asked Ukraine to look into Hunter Biden's corruption'. And pretend thats some grievous offense when Reagan was going around Carter to directly negotiate with a hostile foreign power holding US hostages
