Just to be fair America is rather huge, sometimes going from LA to New York is like a completely whole new world.

That being said I used to have an American expat friend in HK back in 2012 who told me that around 25 to 30% of Americans do not have a passport. They don't exactly travel out of their country.
But things might have changed by now. I am not sure how true is that particular statement.
