The first thing I did was Control + F to see if social security or Medicare are mentioned. They are not.

So the "showdown" amounts to the Democratic party not caring about seriously addressing our spending/deficit/debt issue(no surprise there), and the "most conservative/budget hawk" wing of the GOP doing the same thing with some fanfare around a little bit of discretionary spending.

But Bitch Widow predictably falls for it.

Biden really did a number on the GOP in the SOTU speech. The GOP is no longer able to even consider cutting Social Security and Medicare. The leader of the party(Donald Trump) attacks DeSantis for even thinking about making cuts in his prior Congressional career.

Insults only work here if you do them in tandem with some fact-based retort, as I try to do.

The GOP is wise to realize that cuts to social security and medicare are politically radioactive. You're essentially asking them to commit political suicide because "it's the right thing to do".

They have consistently attempted to for longer than I've been following politics (about 15 years at this point).

The reason they aren't going for it is because Biden used his SOTU speach to call them out on it. They usually like to push these things under the table while screaming about trans people to give cover.
