And yet the metric explicitly cited by the county attorney puts the magic arbitrary number at 25. She didn't make any argument about sliding scales or degrees of responsibility, she did not make any attempt to say it cuts off at 18.

She probably assumed it was obvious to everyone.

and yet its arbitrary. Why 22 and not 25? why 17 and not 22? She cited research that puts the age of full brain development at 25. Do those 5 years- that don't adhere to any research she cited- make the magical difference between 'slap on the wrist' and 'life in prison without parole'?

The difference is legally an adult and not legally an adult, when you factor in that one person was much older and was the one who clearly had the issue with the victim and planned the attack it makes sense to have a huge sentence disparity.

So Haynes recruited (some articles use the word "ordered") the Kamara brothers and gave them the gun used in the incident, and I read that the 15-year-old is the primary suspected gunman (and he also somehow shot his own brother during the incident). Really then, we're looking at what sentence a 15-year-old, ordered by an adult, should face in a situation like this.

I don't think there's a "good" answer to this, because is there really a meaningful difference between going to Red Wing v. being in prison until 30?

The judge today approved the plea deal, citing the state regulation that if prosecution and defense are in agreement the judge shall accept it

We generally sentence teenagers as harshly as adults, but send them to juvenile prisons with a greater focus on rehabilition. Even children as young as 10 are sent to juvenile prisons if the crime is severe: this is because the scientific consensus is that children know right from wrong from a very young age (8+). Look up the murder of James Bulger.

This is the correct approach imho. A 15 year old who acted under the influence of an older person is not someone I think society should give up on, lock the door and throw away the key. Putting him in a juvenile prison where proper effort is made to rehabilitate him seems fair. So my main gripe is not with the circumstances of the sentence under the plea deal, but with the length. Just 2 years for cold-blooded murder is faaar too lenient and wholly inadequate.

without reading it, considering how many bait topics op makes about this, they arent white, are they

According to FBI data, 53% of all murders in the United States are committed by blacks, so there's no ground to accuse the OP of 'bait', a 'selective choice of cases', of 'crafting a distorted narrative' or anything like that. If you picked a case of juvenile murderers at complete random, you more likely than not will get a black perpetrator.

Is there any reason to believe that the percetage of cases solved varies substantially with race?

What race would you argue is overpoliced in America?
