Can someone ELI5 what the Senate Republican rebate for individuals means? I've tried to Google "rebate", but I'm still confused exactly what a rebate is in this context.

What I think it says is if your income tax liability is less than $1200 you only get to claim that, otherwise you get to claim $1200. I think it means if they send you money and you would have had to pay in less than $1200 you basically pay the difference back at tax time. So if I only paid $500 in income next year, I'll have to pay $700 of that $1200 back on my taxes.

I was reading comments online saying that it just meant people were essentially "borrowing" the money from next year's taxes. I'm not well-versed enough to make sense if that's accurate or not.

Didn't see this post lol. Yes, that's pretty much exactly what it means.

Well, it didn't say anything about the 2021 tax year, which is the 2021 calendar year as well. They said "there shall be allowed as a credit against the tax imposed by subtitle A for the first taxable year beginning in 2020," so when we file 2020 taxes in April 2021, is how I read that. I don't see how a rebate then helps us now, unless they mean to make the rebate now a portion of our tax burden come reconciliation time.

His administration's goal is to "ease the guidelines and open things up to very large sections of our country as we near the end of our historic battle with the invisible enemy," the president said. "It's been going a while time, but we win. We win."

:wallbash:

It's mission accomplished all over again.

So your ok with the "leader" of this crisis trying to spin it to gain political favor still? Is there a time when we ask politicians to stop currying for votes..
And actually put people at risk first? or no?

I'm equally "not ok" with the fact that both sides are doing that.

The point of just about every post I've made in this thread has been in support of my main idea: It's bad that both sides are still prioritizing their political rivalry at the expense of making the best decisions to deal with the outbreak.

It's merely the latest (and most potent) expression of a systematic problem that has been going on for generations. The systematic problem is broader. It is something that it is our responsibility as citizens to address so that we can live in a country that is better equipped to handle future problems (where it be can outbreak or anything else).

Still hardly any tests, and according to the site, some states are not reporting negatives anymore.

Updates at 4 pm every day.

You are the government cultist in this situation.

Lets hear those dozen excuses.

No excuses cambo, just following the recommendations of the experts. But please go out, socialize, see the fam.

This is just one sector that's affected that if they didn't get gov't help would go under. Vast majority of these jobs would be lost if we did nothing. Now think about the domino effect. Those 10 million people earn money and go buy food, clothing, cars, etc in other industries. What happens to those industries?

and this is just ONE affected industry. The oil industry has another 10 million people. There's the hotels, cruise lines, etc. Do you you really not understand cause and effect or are just trolling?

Were you for bailing out the auto industry when they were going under? Or is this government hand out different?

Don't worry the cultists will come up with a dozen excuses.

It is indeed a big question mark to me why neither the Obama administration nor the Trump administration have cared about the national strategic reserve...
Normally, the Obama admin was on top of things when it comes to issues of disaster preparedness.

Quick comment on the airline bailouts: airlines have huge running costs relative to their revenue, and the business is really cutthroat with tiny margins. You just cant compare airlines with software companies like Nintendo. Even without the stock buybacks, the airlines couldnt weather a situation like this for much longer. They could perhaps hang in there for 2 additional months, but considering the fact that airlines will be heavily affected for at least a year (while restaurants might open up again during summer if things go well), the airlines would have to be bailed out either way, irrespective from the stock buybacks.

I am, however, totally in favor of super strict regulations for companies which get bailed out by the government: strict caps on C-suite compensation, no dividends, strict standards for the preservation of jobs; and the government has to get stock from these companies in exchange for the government loans.
