but no. Picking the cotton demanded manual labour even though technology meant that it could better processed - this actually lead to an explosive growth in both cotton production and the amount of slaves.
Mechanical cotton picking only became viable much, much later.
There's also a lot going on with other cash crops/demands on the soil and blahblah - but the big picture is that slavery was actually expanding.
