We all died from losing the o-zone in the 90s. Polar bears are extinct. Antarctica is gone. White kkk members constantly protest and destroy cities. Orrrr, not.
I mean, the ozone layer is a really bad example for your point. The loss of it didn't become a problem because we could stop this loss, rather than because the warnings being overblown. And we could stop the destruction of the ozone layer because most of it was caused by just one product (CFC) which was eay to replace. When it comes to fossil fuels, there exist no technologically equivalent alternatives - renewables cannot provide base load, electric vehicles are still inferior, performance-wise, to vehicles with combustion engines etc.
The ozone layer was "save the planet" on easymode. All it took to tackle it was awareness. Global warming is a much more far-reaching problem, tackling it would require either tech which doesn't exist yet or a gigantic sacrifice in standard of living.
