these still seem tangential to the case of self defense. He could be found innocent of murder but charged with gun possession crimes, which as a minor is a class A misdemeanor
Ianal but I don't think they can hinge the immediate case of whether the gun itself was illegally carried as to whether he used it with malice aforethought to murder someone unjustifiably.
afaik, self defense and illegal weapons charges are always separated legally, though it could be a factor in sentencing or biasing a jury
