For slavery? Probably. However, the country as a whole benefited from it and it's our collective sin. The country as a whole let systematic and systemic racism to fester for decades after. None of my ancestors were around for slavery because they were trash whites (Irish and Italian) who came to America in the late 1800s/early 1900s. However, their hurdles were much easier to overcome.

I'm 100% with you on social media not helping.

govt caused and backed systematic racism and societal racism are a thing white people generally need to fix, because they still happen to this day and whites still have advantages because of them.

slavery less so, its 99% the fault of the rich people who exploited them, the govt who allowed it, etc. and the last 1% involves people who "let it happen". today we call idiots who march on govt buildings with guns crazies, but in 1850 they were supposed to just stop slavery? John Brown style?

and how do we fix slavery? i have pages of answers on stopping systematic racism and curing it's ailes. i frankly have no fucking clue where to start with slavery, and how much was removed from the tab when we had a war that not only destroyed the south but cost more american lives than all other wars combined. we (the USA) fought to make sure blacks weren't just abandoned to a nation that had slaves, we built railroads to win the war, paid in blood, and then rebuilt (poorly) the south. is that it? no. but how much does it count? idk. we're just fighting against smoke, idk wtf to do. better to fix lives we can today imo.

An open letter, majority signed by BIPOC people in the field of journalism, writing, and academia, came out today in response to the Harper's letter:

Quote (Open Letter)
On Tuesday, 153 of the most prominent journalists, authors, and writers, including J. K. Rowling, Malcolm Gladwell, and David Brooks, published an open call for civility in Harper’s Magazine. They write, in the pages of a prominent magazine that’s infamous for being anti-union, not paying its interns, and firing editors over editorial disagreements with the publisher: “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted.”

The signatories, many of them white, wealthy, and endowed with massive platforms, argue that they are afraid of being silenced, that so-called cancel culture is out of control, and that they fear for their jobs and free exchange of ideas, even as they speak from one of the most prestigious magazines in the country.

The letter was spearheaded by Thomas Chatterton Williams, a Black writer who believes “that racism at once persists and is also capable of being transcended—especially at the interpersonal level.” Since the letter was published, some commentators have used Williams’s presence and the presence of other non-white writers to argue that the letter presents a selection of diverse voices. But they miss the point: the irony of the piece is that nowhere in it do the signatories mention how marginalized voices have been silenced for generations in journalism, academia, and publishing.

They cover case-by-case examples to refute or at least question the claims in the original Harper's Letter.

Good letter and spot on.

I'm glad these hypocrites are being called out.

The level of entitlement they have is massive for wanting to live in a world without consequences.

what comparative advantage did my family have tho lol? poor as dutch and irish, homesteads in the free states of Illinois and Iowa. never lived within 1,000 miles of a slave. worked hard on farms and passed down land instead of money.

if your family owned slaves then sure, time to apologize. but collective guilt for whites as a people for slavery is stupid. even of the 30% in the south most weren't plantation owners, shop keepers etc had 1 or so slaves. also wrong, but when we invoke plantation imagery in talks about white racism its theater not history.

why make that distinction you mat ask, because we're talking about reparations and other extreme measures. want reparations? sieze plantation property and wealth, leave my 1 acre in wisconsin alone. leave our 300 acres in illinois alone. go down to south carolina and fuck those people out of their homes with a sharp broom stick for all i care.

on the last note i 100% disagree on the hushing vs open conversation. i think we're just going to prolong it, and most racism fighters seem to agree with their narratives of "having hard talks". the problem is those hard talks lead to questions being called racists, or hard talks become hard talking to's where you're ranted at not listened to. the internet could have been a tool to cure racism, but so far this aint it. we're just digging trenches. and with how shitty world govts are on tracking people anon corners will continue to exist and grow, so racists will continue to have an outlet.

Your family was white in an economy that actively stifled competition from blacks and other minorities. That is an advantage that existed everywhere in the country whether or not they directly benefited from slavery and it is an advantage that exists to this day.

Yes, when you invoke plantation life it looks like slavery was a rich person issue, when in reality it was a good portion of southerners issue, and a collectivist issue where you have confederate soldiers saying in their journals they don't feel white because they lost the war.

I don't really know where to go with the last paragraph lol. I tend to think a world with dissociated incel communities instead of local KKK chapters is better, but who am I to say?

reason #1032 to leave your kids out of your damn administration. Jr is doing it right, he gets to write books, endorse companies, etc.

meanwhile ivanka has no actual purpose in the regime other than to build clout for herself and suck off Kushner between meetings. if she just stopped the masquerade of being a member of the white house staff and went back to ripping off designer shoes with chinese sweatshop labor she could endorse w/e she wants, chin scraping surgeons, boob jobbers, dating apps specifically tagetting men who's families own lots of real estate, w/e she wants rly.

People dedicated to censorship claim censorship doesn't exist. More at 11.

This will ultimately destroy the far-left, which will be bad from a balance pov for us all. But better to live in a right world than a left one.
