I should probably contribute something to the topic, since I've been lurking in it since it was posted and it's already getting off-track. So:

Raised to be a whiny, gimme everything I think I deserve generation is 20x better eh?
I think this has more to do with how technology has changed, rather than our lack of corporal punishment.
The fact is, my generation has lower rates of drug use, alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, convictions for violent crimes etc.
The entitlement stems from we can get anything almost instantly. I notice this more with my nephew's generation than mine. If I wanted a movie, for example, I had to save money and buy it or hope I got it as a present. My nephew? He just shares a Netflix account with my sister. It used to cost me $5~$15 to get a movie, which is the same as having Netflix or Hulu or Amazon Plus for a month. Not to mention YouTube providing a host of content, despite the lack of quality.
Smartphones are also becoming cheaper. Last time I was in a cellphone shop, they had more smartphone models than regular phones. When I was little and wanted to know something, I had to go to the library or find a newspaper/magazine with the information. Now you can just Google it from a device you can carry around in your pocket.
Luxury items, despite the bad economy, are becoming cheaper and cheaper. You can order books online and have them at your door in less than a week for minimal shipping costs. Video games were brand new when I was little. Now you can get a used N64 or PS2 for dirt-cheap. I didn't have that option growing up because there wasn't a previous model to buy for cheap. Same thing with computers or any other technology.
I doubt the lack of spankings is what's made us whiny little cunts. It has more to do with being able to think our opinions matter posting online or making shitty YouTube videos while being poor in best time in all of world history to be poor. That instant gratification that comes from having an online world often bleeds over into real life. Just look at Justin Bieber and how he was scouted from his YouTube channel.
