Israeli control over the West Bank is a security asset, as is control over the Golan Heights.

Israel has much more to fear from nearby states than it does from Hamas. Its hard not to be militant when you're surrounded by hostile or recently hostile states.

I'm not condoning Israeli policy, but their security is very relevant to areal solution to the crisis.
