There are flavors of antisocial personality disorder you get to know in the psych ward. When someone says sociopath they typically mean someone with ASPD who is relatively low functioning and who a licensed professional can see coming a mile away. Contrasting this to psychopath, a psychopath would be a little higher functioning and has more capability to hatch a plan.
I had a patient who took his elderly mother out of a nursing home, took her too the bank, emptied her account, and left her to die in a bando (abandoned house), where she was found by people coming there to squat. He was on my unit talking about how his mother died and he couldn't afford a funeral and was trying to collect money there. When I discharged him he was furious that I forcibly took his shit and took all the phone numbers of people he groomed on my unit for future endeavors before i let him go. During our assessment he talked about how sexy I was and kept asking me to piss on him. He is definitely a psychopath.
Alternatively, one of my favorite sociopaths will show up, because he is suicidal, see that it is 10 o'clock, say "FALSE ALARM, I"M NOT SUICIDAL, I"M READY TO GO" and i find out he had a court case at 10 am he was dodging and wants a letter from the social worker to get him out of trouble for missing court, because he had dirty piss or whatever and didn't want to go to jail, so he had a "mental health crisis" instead. This guy is on the spectrum and raps for jesus in the unit library. He is definitely a sociopath, which can be a lot of fun to interact with to be honest, except when he refuses to sleep with a CPAP, wakes up with 70% o2 psychotic and swinging lol.
Both of them are full of "antisocial bullshit", which is the clinical term. It really comes down to level of functioning, because the lack of empathy and manipulation/grooming is the constant in the pathology.
When meeting this type of person always wonder "what is the secondary gain" and you will find out why they're grooming you.
