If you look at the post he's quoting the implication is that he's agreeing with "he had a gun charge, therefore opinion is wrong".

And he has, in the past, taken the position he was criticizing me for taking. In that he drastically lowers his standards for what constitutes an ad hom when he's defending people who have positions he likes.

Gotta look at a lot of context here.

I understand that you can easily see it as ad hom, but I don't think it's unfair to dismiss a critic if they're hypocritical.

The point though is that if he agreed with the opinion of the person he would be zealously defending against the ad hominems. And I know this because I've seen him do it and have pointed out that he regularly goes on both sides of the fence in this kind of argument.
