Trump did better with minorities than Romney did in 2012. It's an inconvenient statistic for liberals, who think that all minorities interpret Trump's "insensitive" comments as racist.

One person called them leeches and another person stars on a reality TV show.

Half-black man.

Hillary had Obama and Bill "first black president" Clinton campaigning for her often. I think it's notable that he did better than Romney in 2012, because part of the leftist narrative was that Trump is a racist.

Plus, Trump did better with Hispanics and Asian-Americans as well.

the issue is the black community understood quite well that the Obamas dont like the Clintons, and that it was damage control for Barry's legacy rather than actual endorsement. That and Slick Willy sticking his foot in his mouth every chance he got.

I know it felt hallow at the time, especially as the GWB-Obama family connections were all over the place.

Trump got 8% of the black vote, compared to Romney's 6%. but the black turnout went down overall. not surprising he got more since he wasnt up against a black man, and not surprising turnout went down since neither were black.

https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/2016-election-day/trump-did-better-blacks-hispanics-romney-12-exit-polls-n681386

His 29% of the Hispanic vote is more surprising, the black vote part seems fairly benign. I dont think many experts counted on him outmatching Romney on the Hispanic vote.

Pretty much this, I guess Romney performed very badly with hispanics since he was unapproachable and elitist. So his latino performance set the bar really low.

Trump certainly had more appeal to working class latinos than Romney, and to latinos who have been in the country for decades and see and feel the adverse effects of unrestricted immigration in their own communities. And to latinos that came into the country legally, who didnt violate laws, who played by the rules instead of shitting on them.

Those points aside, it's not like Trump was blowing it out of the water with latinos, not like he exceeded Romney's low latino performance by a lot. It's not like he miraculously had a great latino vote on the magnitude of what W. Bush had... it's just that pundits predicted his latino vote to be really abysmal, and it wasnt.

Testament to how powerful an economic message can be, and how little identity politics actually matters to the average voter. I know Republicans love to say that it drives people away, but it really only affects people who pay attention to the minutiae of politics on a day to day basis.

"I'll bring back garbage jobs" really resonates with people who refuse to accept those jobs aren't coming back.

Another reason why Bernie would have slaughtered Trump in the general. He had a more popular economic message than Hillary or Trump.
