Versailles was reparations not sanctions, the former is more manageable as companies operate freely and ultimately it's the government that shoulders a high tax burden...which is no more than having high interest payments on debt. UK govt ministers today coming out with similar lines about the sanctions being designed specifically to undermine the putin regime. Will be interesting to see what the oligarchs do now their net worths have been cut massively

also this instance of sanctions is the correct punishment of certain individuals, who unlike the german empire after WWI will still likely be around after the conflict ends. most of the 2nd reich leadership either died or fled to safety
