It made sense at the time for geopolitical purposes. The United States gov thought they could reform these people, and consequently, prevent the country from being a terrorist hub for Al-Queda and and others neighboring countries like Pakistan. No one expected the Afghan National Army to just concede to the Taliban without any fight after we pulled out the troops. All in all, it is a colossal failure that would have happened whether it's Biden or Trump and the Afghani still see us as occupiers, which in some way was true.
