Well... that was indeed a shitshow. Unfortunately less entertaining than I had hoped for.

I get what Trump was trying to do, be really aggressive, throw Biden off his balance and not let him get his footing back, dominate him. But it was far too much, so that Trump came across as rude, obnoxious and unhinged. He really didnt do himself any favors tonight. This was not a performance that convinced any true swing voters or undecideds to go with Trump.

Biden was kinda low energy and mediocre, but he held up fairly well, and that was all he needed to do. He exceeded the low expectations I had for him, albeit not by much.

On the substance, I think both candidates had the upper hand on the issues we expected them to - Trump on the economy and law&order, Biden on covid and healthcare. Overall, Biden's arguments were cogent slightly more often than Trump's.

From a strategical point of view, this was a big win for the Biden campaign. The raw outcome was either a small Biden win or a draw, while Trump would have needed a big win. Now, he has wasted his best remaining chance to turn this race around, and his performance tonight might have even hurt his standing even further. I cant really imagine anyone who wasnt already a hardcore MAGA person to have liked what they saw and heard from their president tonight. This debate will not play well in the suburbs or among college-educate conservatives.

One thing that Biden did was he made an active attempt to talk to America, as opposed to Trump who was constantly looking at Biden. I don't see this as a small win for Biden, he won this with plenty of margin to spare, and the reason he did was because Trump's performance was just really bad.

I give Biden a clear win on the debate part of the debate, and Trump a small win on the substance. Since I generally care more about substance than optics, this adds up to a draw or a narrow Biden win in my book. But this personal assessment of mine of course hinges on me being far more aligned on the issues with Trump than with Biden/liberals.

So yes, I can see why this debate was a decent-sized win for Biden from the perspective of a liberal.

Trump couldn't come out and say Proud Boys should stand down. He couldn't say to stay peaceful.

He barely came out ahead on Law&Order simply because Biden denied Antifa is an organized movement.

Biden just got a huge win with swing voters 100%.

I feel like that was a disaster for both sides.

No one gained anyone they didn’t have before and half of the questions were avoided by both sides.

Watching post-debate analysis on CNN, and the key tell for how Trump failed is Santorum explaining what Trump "should've" said.

Again and again, it's apparent that any right-wing populist with a 3 digit IQ could handle all this better than Trump.
