What good does it do to restrict a right in a way that will clearly not save lives? We are talking about a niche role that the AR-15 has filled by chance because the weapons and tactics tend to be copied from one incident to another. If not the AR-15, perhaps the Desert Eagle, or maybe they'll realize that they can do far more damage, and longer with a pistol or two and some extra ammunition. The ban serves no legitimate purpose other than to normalize the confiscation of legal weapons.
How is that clear at all? There's multiple cases where someone under 21 buys a rifle, because they aren't legally able to buy a handgun. Putting up another barrier that prevents disturbed young men from buying rifles would clearly save some lives, although it's probably true it's not that many.
Personally I'd be in favor of another assault weapons ban being passed. I think these rifles being purchasable causes more harm than good in society. I'd also be cool with more stringent requirements to purchase any firearm, and I say this as a firearm owner. It's never going to happen obviously, but I think it's what a sensible society would do.
