Republicans aren't "real Republicans" if they inconvenience the party.

My favorite example of this is the Dover evolution trial. Prior to the case Santorum basically said "It's in the bag. He's a Christian, Bush appointed, and a die-hard Republican" when referencing the judge who would be presiding over the case. After the trial Santorum labeled him as a fake Republican planted by the liberals.

in many ways, republicans from the "bush wing" of the party, guys like mccain and flake, hold an entirely different ideology and worldview than trump. its nothing new that they are among the most vocal critics of "trumpism".

in the end, trumps primary victory in 2016 was a hostile takeover of the GOP and brought a massive schism to the surface that would have led to an all-out intraparty war within the GOP had they lost to hillary. within the GOP of today, you have massive ideological dissonance and tons of unresolved disagreements that were only thinly covered by nothing but trumps victory. success is the only thing standing between the republicans and tearing themselves apart.

oh, and of course your argument could go the other way as well: many heads should theoretically explode when people realize that the democrats and left-wing activists are nowadays defending and rooting for the FBI and the deep state.
