So Mitch forced a cloture vote, knowing that it would fail, to put pressure on the Democrats. Not one Democrat voted for it, and it wasn't exactly a razor thin margin.

But sure, Democrats are supposed to just sign whatever Mitch and Mcnuchin put in front of them, because time is of the essence, even though Trump's delayed response is part of the reason we're in this mess.

It'll work itself out. If the Democrats have to, they'll make serious concessions, because they're the governing party.

Nancy Pelosi just revealed some of the text of her house bill.
Here are some of the wonderful provisions of her "cononavirus relief package" that was totally not designed to be a poison pill that's completely unpassable and serve no purpose but partisan obstructionism:

  • Strengthens bargaining powers for unions
  • Increases fuel emissions standards
  • Expansion of solar and wind tax credits
  • Bails out the US post office
  • Bails out student loans
  • Conducts "risk-limiting audits of results of elections"
  • Mandates national same-day voter registration
  • Mandates 15 days early voting and mail-out ballots to all Americans
  • Mandates pay equity that says gender, racial and ethnic minorities must receive the same pay at companies regardless of whether they perform the same work
  • Mandates that corporate boards must have forced diversity quotas for gender, race and ethnic identities on both the board and leadership and subcommittees
  • Expands child care and earned income tax credits that won't apply for a year

I've only had time to glance at the surface of the bill, it just came out. The compromise that senate republicans and democrats had struck was a bill narrowly crafted to apply to the immediate crisis at hand, a stimulus package of immediate relief now for Americans, small businesses, governments, the CDC and failing corporations. Pelosi's counterproposal isn't just an ideological wishlist, its a list of completely fucking unrelated bullshit that doesn't have any impact until 6-12 months from now. I'm pretty sure she unironically tucked anti-Hyde Amendment language in there somewhere just for spite.

You told us that Democrats are the only party left that governs and that they wouldn't hold up government function.

A lot of Americans aren't taking this seriously still. I think they need to start fining people here as well. The rotten thing is if America struggles to contain the virus, it's going to affect everyone else economically.

fines? how about jail with Harvey Weinstein or a nice little permanent vacation to Lompoc or Rikers. fucking around with other people’s health and putting even longer stress on business all because they can’t sit on a couch for a few weeks is pretty damn close to subversion.

In German media, I read an article yesterday about dissident doctors ringing the alarm that it's spreading in their country and how the government is trying to cover it up.

You can try to translate it with DeepL or something:

I agree that it is important for people to do their own research. The government is an inherently untrustworthy entity. Whatever criticism they deserve for misleading their own people is mild compared to the amount of criticism that people should get for expecting it to be true.

A politician on a podium is basically the same thing as a defense attorney in a trial. He's only going to say things that support his narrative. The masses should have, by now, learned to take it with a grain of salt.

Infecting weinstein with corona was a good idea. I mean compared to how they got rid of epstein, too much fallout

No, because you are not comparing apples to apples. China's threat and the US threat are different in nature, for all the reasons I stated in my previous comment.

It looks like China has a chance to keep their total deaths under 5,000. The number of US deaths will almost surely be much higher. But you can't just look at the outcome in order to judge the response. You must consider the outcome relative to the threat.

i understand it's not an apples to apples comparison.

china has much more leverage, being an oppressive regime. but they also have 1.3 billion people.

the US has less leverage, being a democratic nation, and they have 400 million people.

even if we have less control, the fact that we have 3x less people mean that death totals are still something we shouldn't exceed. we also have better healthcare. this disease spreads like wildfire in large cities, and china has many more large cities. even if we dont have the control to lockdown cities like they do, once it was shown that was the correct approach, we should have tried. and yet here we are, no national lockdown, and only a handful of states in lockdown. and the states that are we still have many people working and leaving home.

but again, my point in the post you quoted wasnt that this is apples to apples. it was that Trump voters were looking at this very shallowly and cheered on narratives for racist reasons, and will have to eat their words once the far more complex issue worsens. just in this conversation we've gone deeper into specific context than these people have done in weeks. they read headlines about deaths and infected while calling it an overhyped media hoax, and think that it's really all china's fault for in the first place that it even got here.

The only person that thinks they have to eat their words is someone who is unaware of the larger context (and why it is not a2a)

the tldr is: there will be no federal cononavirus relief
democrats killed it. Any hopes of a coronavirus package are gone at this point. Pelosi made the cynical pragmatic decision to let this crisis get worse intentionally, with the mother of all poison pills. And I mean, even by normal poison pill legislation standards, this thing is batshit insane, like planting the communist manifesto inside a piece of legislation.

I was just about to post this Twitter thread:
https://twitter.com/rachelbovard/status/1242116258834845710

I haven't followed this that closely but it does appear Pelosi is taking advantage of the situation. I stand by my statement that the only party capable of governing are Democrats, but a 1,000+ page bill with all of these unrelated issues is clearly a bad look. That's a separate issue from whether the bills McConnell has put on the floor are sufficient.
