You're conflating special masters with special counsels, right? All a special master does is review evidence that investigators already seized and identify what should be privileged and excluded so prosecutors cant see it, like attorney client communications. In theory. In practice, prosecutors probably have Trump's lawyers phone bugged

I am explaining to you what a special master does. In both criminal and civil law, they are very often used by courts in pretrial discovery motions to sort out privileged attorney client communications / work product from being disclosed during discovery. In white collar cases, special masters are probably more common than not. We've already had multiple Trumpburger special master cases so far. They aren't restricted to trial use or attorney-client privilege, they are the go-to method for judges to resolve contested privileged evidence being claimed by prosecutors or investigators.
