Sure, but again: my argument was that EVs don't offer much performance improvements over classic cars. Your point that autonomous driving is a big leap forward is true, but not necessarily tied to EVs and therefore not a real counterexample to my argument. ;)

Btw, premium turbodiesels have tremendous torque too.

The real argument against EV's is not IMO about performance but rather the fact that we can't actually have wide spread adoption without crashing our power grids. The world is tens of trillions of dollars away from being able to have a huge % of vehicles be electric. We'd have to basically be rebuilding cities and try to have electricity storage mechanisms that don't really exist yet.

It's not happening in the next 5 years. 20 years? Maybe but i'm skeptical. I think its probably even longer.

I really doubt that Telsa will ever be anything but a premium product. The established volume manufacturers like Ford, VW, Fiat or Toyota will take the mass market if you ask me.
We're fully agreeing on Apple being overpriced crap. They're doing a remarkable job at branding and cultivating their core customer base though, so respect where respect is due.

tesla can remain a premium product 100k+ with a bit less premium options in say the 50-75k range, and then we'll have other brands with lower price points. my biggest worry is the subscription model going wild.

Yeah, that's basically the next step on the WEF agenda: getting the plebs used to renting everything. "You will own nothing and be happy".

The less people own, the more dependent they are on the government and/or their corporate overlords. Someone who owns his house and car and has several hundred k in his bank account can take a sabbatical, can take a more fulfilling job for less pay, can decide to become an activist or go into politics out of idealistic reasons. The powers that be imho want to get rid of the Western middle class which has the means to break out of the rat race and the independence to push back against their political direction. Their vision for the future is some sort of neofeudalism where everyone is a wage slave and fully at their mercy.

100%, ive been avoiding that type of scenario for a long time. i'm not renting my router from my ISP for a monthly charge, i'm not renting my water softener from culligan with a service plan to fix it if it breaks, i'm not getting into a furnace air filter subscription plan, etc. even for those who own they're trying to reduce what is physically yours.

first gen smart phones were a god damn mess lol. they had storage issues, apps were laughably simplistic, and internet coverage sucked for a long time. people literally said the same type things about smartphone issues in the early days you're saying now. "my ipod has 20 gb, why would i want a 1 gb iphone", "coverage is awful i cant wait 5 mins to load an email", "battery life on these is awful im not going everywhere with a charging cord", "the price point is too high for average consumers", etc.

I'm not saying somalis will be driving teslas in 15 years, but if u dont think average first world consumers will all have EVs in 20 or so years i think you're crazy and disregard exponential progress patterns.

then 3rd worlders will be demanding self driving cars the same way they demanded internet access.

What I think is more likely is that eventually gas will be $15 per gallon and people will just naturally shift over to electric eventually.

Maybe in a 100 years

People will slowly transition to electric when electric becomes more viable. The battery technology needs improvements, it's close but still far away.

I'm pro solar and wind energy. But recognize if we put everyone on the power grid with electric vehicles there would be wide spread blackouts.

The widespread blackouts might be inevitable in about forty years. The supply of oil is not infinite.

US jobs report indicates hiring surged adding 528,000 jobs in July and we're back to pre-pandemic levels of employment.

how long does an EV need to be able to drive on a single charge for you to consider it viable?
