Hand guns are already barred by federal law from under 21 Y/O from a licensed merchant, as I'm SURE you're aware. And what if the 18 year old needs protection from her father? Does she just go and beg someone to straw purchase for her? Here in MN, that will land someone in jail for a year.
i'd expect someone who requires a gun to protect her from her father to go to the police, not purchase a firearm to shoot him. but maybe i'm old fashioned.
in any case i see hand guns are the most commonly used type in mass shootings, a statistical category that captures a lot of non-school shooting applicable cases. but do not find a source specifically for school shootings.
so working backwards:
Uvalde, 22 dead, AR 15
Santa Fe, 10 dead, shotgun + revolver
Parkalnd, 17 dead, AR 15
Roseburg Oregon, 10 dead, 2 glock handguns
Santa monica 2013, 6 dead, ar 15
Sandy hook, 27 dead, handguns
plenty of ar 15 carnage in high profile school shootings, and it was the predominate weapon in Vegas.
overall these weapons aren't chosen for maximum efficiency, they're chosen because shooters who are gun illiterate see it's the public enemy #1 and gun chosen by other school shooters. they're seeking to fit the profile to get famous. and as a laymen shooter they're likely better off with it than a hand gun, even if just spraying into crowds. most of these dweebs couldnt put a grouping of any note on a target with a handgun even with a month on the range. the only advantage to a hand gun is quick draw speed and concealability.
