If the argument is "Trump brought in all these new voters because of his right-wing populism, so we'll just go with those policies, and a prettier and more serious face, and succeed", the article rebuts that. Trump's support, by and large, was not because of his handful of right-wing populist positions.
Which to me, is a pretty good argument as to why right-wing populism is not sustainable.
People on this forum don't support Trump because of the trade war or the marginal amount of new wall built. They like that he is cruel to people they hate.
I don't agree with this. I think it's a fundamental misreading of the situation.
Trump succeeded because he cast himself as a foil to political correctness. People are tired of hearing about the white supremacist boogeyman hiding behind every political problem this country faces, and media missteps have gradually destroyed the credibility of the media as an institution. That is well beyond Trump, it is a cultural war, and the populist right has taken a side.
The populist economic rhetoric is a second pillar, but most people aren't going to understand the particulars. Suffice to say that casting yourself, as Romney did, as representative of the top .01% is not a winning long-term strategy.
