OH, the magical "price of steel will go up" argument.
Big giant ....wroooooong.

Yeah, the price of steel will go up because, it's made locally, it has to be shipped (more shipping jobs) less distance, It has to use local coal, (more coal mining jobs).

Etc. Come back when you have some actual numbers, not guesses and projections from people who are trying to manipulate the govt's decisions. ^^

It's a basic concept to grasp.

Currently people buy steel from sources that pay their workers vastly less than vs what you would pay if the source was Steel companies in the US that would have to pay American wages which would be vastly higher than that of a country like China.

If companies seek to remain profitable or maintain the same level of profit they currently have, which they WILL. They will have no choice but to raise their prices because their expense increase due to labor increase and the fact if people buy from foreign sources , the tariff will raise prices as well.

This is going to raise the price of steel. There's really no way around that and to think it wouldn't is to pretty much disagree with both left wing and right wing economic thinking.

The president is putting a tariff on foreign steel, mainly China's so they don't own the US in another 20 years.

/e

AND like I said already...it's not JUST about the tariff.

From the article I posted in THIS topic and you either didn't read or chose to ignore cause it was inconvenient for your beliefs...

What does that have anything to do with steel costs rising?

Oh, you one of those folks that thinks after a law is passed by the govt., no time passes until we get to see the benefits?
China HAS to sell their steel or they will starve.
Foreign steel will move back to the US, cause it will be cheaper for them to come to the US.

The US can't continue with the huge trade deficit with China.

That's why the quote above makes sense. and why bring the steel industry back to the US is a good thing. If any foreign steel companies want to avoid the tariffs, they can bring their steel mills....back to the US.
It was a mistake to move the steel industry OUT of the US in the first place.

It would be like moving the wheat industry out of the US. DUH !!!

/e You have to take this tariff issue and the returning steel industry together, for this to make sense.

/ee The US is the biggest importer of steel in the world. Every country that's NOT the US has to ship steel (and pay for that shipping) to be able to sell it to the US.
That's why many of the foreign steel companies will come back to the US.

Read my second edit above... and quote me where I said steel prices, at least in the beginning, might not rise a bit.
Or where I said "steel prices wouldn't rise" anywhere in PaRD. I'm sure you can quote it.

so let me get this straight. The president is putting a tariff on foreign steel, which is cheaper, to force people to buy more steel from domestic sources, which are more expensive, but the price of steel wont go up?

you want actual numbers, I just bought a truck load of 2" od 11 ga wall tube steel for floor supports from a domestic supplier for the first time in 2 years. before it was all from china. tube supports arent a quality control concern like shafting or pneumatic components. that truck cost me more than a shipment from china.

He also pretends that with foreign source prices increased 25%, that domestic sources aren't going to sell for about the same price, rather than drastically undercutting them when their margins are obviously already tight.

This string if posts is

Shipping jobs? How does he think China gets steel to buyers from our ports? Teleportation?

Like I said. I didn't say it. That was sarcasm.
You need to include the later part about, nothing happens INSTANTLY.
The world is not a computer. You don't change something and get what you wanted...instantly. there are 7-8 billion people that all have to think things through, discuss things, calculate cost/benefit ratios, vote on things etc.

I assumed this was common knowledge.

We need to look at what's happening, or what Trump (in this case) is doing, and look at the big picture.
Yeah, I'll officially say it now: At first, steel prices may rise a bit. But the gains we will see by this latest govt. decision will far outweigh this discomfiture of a temporary small rise in steel costs.

There are many pluses to this tariff decision.

Things like coal mining, trucking, other shipping, jobs will all increase, as we regain a local steel industry. Not to mention the steel mill jobs themselves.
Plus, we help to lessen the trade deficit with China, we slow them down in their (what I like to call) taking over the world mission. We make many peoples lives better, that are now suffering through the same things that we suffered through in the 1900's (like working conditions etc.)

In a very short time, say 10 years, the US will be much better off economically, we will have created 100's of thousands of new jobs that don't require a degree.

I assume you already know all this and are just trying to be ornery.

Nothing happens overnight, in a country or a world, with this many people. But that doesn't mean it won't happen.

/e Don't worry Knopp, I feel quite sure your country will be exempted. The US aren't meanies. We're just trying to survive like everyone else.

Ahh yes the "just give it time to work" argument.

as if the next democrat, or even republican to take power, wont roll back all of the tariffs.

obama used the "just give it time to work" argument for healthcare, just let the dust settle he said. Trump is dismantling it.
