I had my birthday about 3 weeks back. My client gave me 3 bottles of Chateau Pavie 2010
My most recent damage is
1. La Conseillante 1988 Magnum ( got it really cheap )
2. 2013 Cos D'Estournel
3. 2006 Leoville Las Cases
but my go to bottle will always be this.
Pichon Lalande

I’m not that rich to go for old wines and I’m dumb enough to totally get scammed while buying single bottles, so I prefer to stick to lesser known commercially available brands and young ones relying on tips of my French network who sample these by the dozens. After all I’m not investing in wine, I’m drinking it with my steak/lasagna. And to be honest I barely drink anyway.

Cotes du rhone is strong, you better to take it with saucy red meat and all, with bordeau you have a larger panel.
You should try Bourgogne.
White wines can be very interesting with foie gras -Sauterne- or sea food/salmon: -Pouilly- . With a special note for Sancerre young (sea food) or aged (poultry, cheese)
Pouilly Fume and Sancerre are def on my list for whites if I have to pick one up for a dinner. A friend of mine recently imported a crate of this one for me which I really really liked.
