I've played like 3 hours of Doom Eternal and it definitely doesn't have the spark that Doom 2016 had. The environments all look like plastic and they sped up combat / added more mechanics beyond the point where it's intense and well into the point where it's overwhelming.
I'm very sad.
Then there's them just kinda throwing random lore at you that had no basis in the last game, and it just all feels fake.
I'm loving the game, but I can totally see why people might be overwhelmed. Doom Eternal on harder difficulties has truly become a delicate dance. It was already like this in 2016 but a lot of arenas where ones you started with destroying the fleshy thingy. Now a lot more arenas are open and it's more organic encounters coupled with more tools you need to use and things you have to avoid it's showing gamers that they lost all their FPS skills from playing CoDs for so long. At least they've lost their movement skills, no FPS but arena shooters make real use of this and arena shooters have been done since forever now.
As for the aesthetic of the game. They've went a little bit more cartoonish designs that pull from the nostalgia of the old games. You can see a couple comparison videos from different demons that are in both games. This game also has way more varied locations compared to 2016 and has a less coherent look because of this. Also it's a bit less dark/somber art direction wise in many ways compared to the previous game.
The game is insane graphical fidelity wise though, id tech 7 and the wizards at id did an insane job.
Digital Foundry has a long-ish video about the next tech and comparison on how well it runs on all consoles and the game is packed with more stuff and runs smoother than 2016.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsmqWSZpgJY&t=119sI'd wager that the final product is a glimpse into how next gen will look.
I want to also mention how fast this game loads with a SSD, it's great.
