That's how voters of a particular party feel about their own candidate in an increasingly polarized political climate, sure. And it's based off of a single data point (ABC News Survey).
I put much more stock into something like favorability, which has hundreds of data points and has been better studied. Besides, Kerry was also a lousy candidate who lost to one of the worst presidents ever (though, the incumbent does have the advantage).
