No need to overcomplicate it IMO

if we undercomplicate the question "what is life" we just end up letting in plenty of things that are fine morally to kill.

if we undercomplicate the question "what is murder" we just end up letting in plenty of things that are morally fine there as well.

I'd rather the government make contraception free and readily available for everyone, and then either reduce the number of weeks allowed or outlaw abortion altogether. Invest heavily in orphanages and foster care services to take in babies from disadvantaged backgrounds, whose parents would have aborted them for economic reasons. If the state does this, they're ensuring that no one has a (subjectively) good reason to have an abortion, unless the mother's life is in danger or there are serious health defects present.

Then I think practically you could impose harsh sentences on those who still try to get illegal abortions.

Literally the main issue: to solve a problem that is generating more votes for anti-abortion rights politicians.
Will not happen: create more poverty and inequalities instead.

What strikes me about this though then is that your position is wanting to equate "abortion = murder" without actually treating and responding to it as murder. I find myself wondering why that's the case. If you believe the fetus is as much a "life" as you and I, why does the fetus deserve less protection from being murdered than in the instance where I say I have intention to go murder another adult?

I just said you could impose harsh sentences. You were talking about practical realities...how is it practical to charge possibly hundreds of thousands of women with murder when the majority don't believe that it is?

First, remove incentives to have abortions. Then the public will be far less approving of abortions when it's being done on the sly for lifestyle reasons and then let the courts deal with it.

Harsh sentences happen only after murder occurred. I'm talking about the prevention of murder.

Do you agree that if I had explicit intention to murder another adult, law enforcement would justifiably intervene up to the point of physically restraining me to prevent said murder from happening? Or, do you think law enforcement would simply wait until I have murdered someone to then act and utilize "harsh sentences"?

Law enforcement would justifiably intervene, provided there is actual evidence of criminal intent.

And in the case of such intent for someone who is pregnant and plans on aborting, what should they do?

At what point in time though? Once the intention is established, or after the abortion has occurred?
