Yes, vaccine discrepancy is a thing. I never claimed otherwise. What I push back against is this narrative which puts the blame for it exclusively on selfish whiteys while ignoring the impact of vaccine hesitancy in the third world. Or that Omicron most definitely developed in a single, strongly immunocompromised HIV patient, so that even much higher vax rates couldn't have prevented this scenario.

People who survive can just get it again. Plenty of people who haven't gotten it yes would be risking much higher chances than normal at death and disability.

NA, Europe, East Asia and, yes, Africa already have more than enough vaccines, their problem is not availability but vaccine hesitancy. Latin America is almost at the point of having enough vaccines for everyone who wants them and Southern as well as South Eastern Asia are getting there too. Good luck with increasing vaccine uptake in Africa via mandates or force, or with adjusting the existing vaccines to a new variant like Omicron in third world labs that reverse engineered the OGs.

It took around a year to get the world vaccinated the first time around without waiving IP. And the major vaccine producers massively ramped up their capacity. So if(!) a new vaccine is necessary for Omicron, it will take a lot less than a year to get it out this time.


Rescinding IP might have made a small difference a year ago, but at this point, it would definitely do more harm than good.
