"We took action last night to stop a war," he said, reading carefully from a teleprompter, as he sought to allay concerns he was dragging the United States into another bloody conflict in the Middle East. "We did not take action to start a war."

lol how Orwellian.

I don't see why people have to hold moral relativist meta-self-criticism all the time. "But the CIA runs shadow ops killing both state and nonstate actors and they'd be a 'legitimate target' too" The replies of course had to go down that line, decrying US imperialism. Well, I don't see why you can't acknowledge that every country runs their geopolitics on a whole bunch of levels including shadow operations and proxy wars and still firmly believe that America is right and China / Iran / Russia is wrong. It doesn't have to be blind, jingoistic patriotism. Its just that under all the moral relativism, the similar means being justified are not leading to similar ends. The US isn't out there fighting to spread a militarized theocracy or totalitarian communist power that represses people. To me it all seems a bit superficial, the whole "I just completed Geopolitics 101 at a liberal arts college and I'm ready to burn a flag" thing. You don't need to see stars and stripes pouring out of every orifice of US policy and accept every decision uncritically to not be a pinko traitor.

I wholeheartedly agree with his take.

The big open question is "why now?", and if this

is true, then that's good enough for me. A lot will, of course, depend on how Iran reacts in the coming days and weeks.

Why now is fairly obvious to me. Trump has something he can rally his followers around, and the oppurtunity was as ripe as it can get. A militia leader AND the general mainly responsible for their intel/leadership? Sounds like a dream come true for US military leadership.

What I have an issue with is mostly that the US has now directly targeted military personnel of a state they are not at war with, opening up their leadership/military personnel for attacks. People like IS or Al Qaeda do not respect moral codes, but Iran generally does. Other than that, it's just this feeling that this is gonna escalate in some way we don't see right now.
