The X's make complete sense. The conditions are favorable there to support visual moisture but not the surrounding area. Hence, whenever a plane passes through that patch (regardless of direction) it leaves a lasting trail. Then it enters the warmer / dryer air surrounding it and no trail is left.
Similar to a lenticular cloud.
