Manufacturing unemployment is at a record low

The unemployment rate in the U.S. is currently at 4.1%, its lowest level since December 2000.

But if you’re in the manufacturing industry, you’ve never seen an unemployment rate lower. In November, the unemployment rate in the manufacturing industry fell to 2.6%, the lowest on record for the series, which dates back to January 2000.

Jed Kolko, an economist at job site Indeed, notes that in 2017 manufacturing employment has grown 1.5% from last year, right around the same pace at overall economic growth. In 2016, manufacturing employment declined.

Since 2000, however, overall employment in manufacturing has declined about 25%, falling from around 17 million at the beginning of the century to around 13 million today. Workers leaving the industry or the workforce altogether, and therefore no longer counting as unemployed manufacturing workers, has no doubt contributed to some of this decline.

This new low for manufacturing unemployment, however, comes during a year in which President Donald Trump has repeatedly harped on his desire to kickstart the sector.

And amid a year that has seen the stock market soar to record highs and the economy enjoy some of its strongest overall growth in years, the administration will no doubt see this data point as affirmation of their economic initiatives boosting the manufacturing industry.

I love the thought that most of the people who read that will not realize what it means.

i literally design and oversee the installation of manufacturing equipment, whereas you reference baseball seamers and horseless carriages...

you stopped learning in 1971 or so

if only you knew how many manufacturing jobs i've demolished in the last 2 years. i feel like a supervillain sometimes when i think of all the old men in your age bracket im forcing to live in their children's homes and squander their hard earned 401ks to scrape by. i eat the skill-less for breakfast lunch and dinner, and i'm going to keep putting lazy millennials in the place of 3 people from your generation until the housing market shifts over to us and you're all living off of us.

I think you should seek help for these delusions. Your little corner of the world has nothing to do with national statistics.

i put lines in 42 states and 4 international locations this year. I am currently working with at least 7 nationwide brands i can guarantee you buy. If you've had oreos, johnsonville sausages, kraft cheese, post cereal, kemps milk, ANY brand of oil filter, chobani yogurt, etc etc etc etc, its because it runs on my machines.

Serious question, did you have to take your classes in a room segregated from the normal kids?

Those 7 brands are parent companies, look at the company who owns post for example, or the company who makes Oreos. Those are just one product they make, they each have hundreds of brands. I have designed equipment for over 300 products just this year, and im a single project manager at a company with 4. we're a small-mid sized company in a massive sector. extrapolation clearly isnt something u can understand on your iq but try.

Those products were just me spitballing. if you think the brands im not working with are doing something different you're delusional. we quote for all brands, there's not a single nationwide brand i didnt handle a quoting process for last year, we just didnt get all the jobs, obviously. Name a single nationwide brand and i can look up on my system when and where we quoted a job for them and what the piece of equipment was.

you REALLY are over your head in this conversation and you're tossing out bullshit like its gonna work on me. i do this for a living, you dont even have the mental faculties to understand what im saying. now, do me a favor, and act predictable. tell me how im obviously mad, etc. im quite calm, sitting at my desk laughing at the schmucks who will see that article and be mislead with my coworkers for some friday entertainment.

i, and people like me, are going to cut a hole in your generation that will have men like you begging for a hand out just to avoid the embarrassment of moving in with your children at 70. the wheels are already turning, that's what that article says, you just dont realize it. like WAY too many. you're done for, your time has passed.
