Assad literally has more support in Syria than Biden has here in the USA. Of-course that isn't particularly hard to achieve, but it gets the point across.

Autocracies typically have more relative support from their sheepel. Putin has 80+% approval rating afterall.

Semi conductors will fuel all modern economies, it is quite clear Russia will concede losses in their market for this agenda. The real question is what next? If China chooses to take Taiwan, then the US is in a very precarious semi conductor position. Furthermore what happens with rate hikes with energy costs increasing.

Much like Russia hasn't been sitting on their asses regarding their potentially vulnerable economy, neither has the US been sitting on its ass regarding dependence on semi conducters and rare earths. They have recently begun projects to start acquiring rare earths and to start production of semi conducters at home. Neither country has made sufficient progress to feel no pinch as a result of fallout from this conflict, but they are far enough along to reduce the pain of it. And in maybe 10 or so years will be fully self sufficient, or at least capable of being self sufficient.
