Atheists know more about Christianity than your average christian according to a pew study. Evangelicals and mormons were the only groups who scored higher. Atheists scored highest in knowledge of world religions though. So it's actually more likely that an atheist read the bible than a christian.
http://www.pewforum.org/2010/09/28/u-s-religious-knowledge-survey/Study is from 2010 though so there may be a newer one but I just remember seeing this one when it came out.
I just took their quiz and got an 80. I got one of the christian questions wrong and a few other random ones
Take your "average" anything and you can expect to see ignorance. Many people who
identify as Christian simply don't have an interest in learning about their faith. Atheists may do a bit better testing simply because they have more of an interest in learning the very basics of different religions.
That said, the
vast majority of atheists haven't read the Bible and don't have a true desire to learn about Christianity. They've read Leviticus and got halfway through Matthew before settling for Richard Dawkins videos.
