It's in line with the first part in that quotation I gave. The 1995 UN definition is similar to yours.

Right. As you included the more recent definition, which has replaced the older one, I felt the need to state a criticism I had with the more modern definition used by the UN. I think the 1995 definition is not a bad one.

Nope. That's pretty much where I was going with extreme poverty. Don't see how it's a wimpy definition. I wasn't going with any definition of extreme poverty just saying that the poverty experienced by some disabled and dying people in the developed world is extreme in my eyes. I mean it sucks if you can't afford cable but that ain't extreme. But when a guy with a debilitating mental illness is homeless and penniless with no help from the state then that is unacceptable to me in the west where we can afford to house and feed and offer free support and healthcare to such people.

Wimpy definition because I put 5 seconds of thought into it and defined it in broad strokes. There are no concrete figures or metrics by which to determine whether a person is or is not experiencing extreme poverty, by that definition. What does "regularly" mean? What metric of shelter is a "basic necessity"? These are the things that make it a wimpy definition.

Less than $1USD a day is a strong definition. It is a shitty definition, but a strong one. Clear terms, distinct, with an obvious cutoff. No questions.
