John Kelly straight up said that the Civil War could have been avoided if the North had compromised with the South. The only compromises the South was asking for were all related to slavery. It's a pretty damn legit question to ask when you literally have a member of the fucking cabinet suggesting that we should have let the slavers keep their slaves.
well, what happened to the freedom of blacks in the south after the civil war? jim crow anyone? lynchings anyone?
blacks have only been truly granted equal rights and opportunities in the south when society was ready for it during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, 100 years later.
the north tried to force the southern societies to abandon slavery even though they werent ready for that yet. the result was a loss of over 1 million lives, and the empowerment of blacks in the south effectively only lasted for 11 years.
I personally think that Lincoln and the Unionists did the right thing. But there is a case to be made that compromise and attempts at gradual reform of the southern societies could have worked as well.
