you've got cause and effect backwards. Flake isn't criticizing Trump now that he's no longer running for re-election, he's no longer running for re-election because he criticized Trump.
Flake was down 20 points in polling specifically because voters hated his anti-Trump brand of pro-immigration pro-free-trade establishmentarianism. He's been attacking Trump since before the election.
