Was watchiing it and it hit a special place close to home. As my family has operated a giant glass company for going on a century now. And I currently work within the tech side of the glass industry and he brought up a very relevant point around 8:30. Its increasingly harder and harder for us to compete with Chinese companies. It doesn't really matter what area of glass, all areas are negatively affected. They sell windshields and other types of glass at pennies on the dollar in comparison to what were capable of cooking up. I mean legitimately $10-$25 (after being shipped across the god damn globe) compared to $150 for effectively the same piece of glass made right here at home. We aren't competing on even remotely level playing fields and haven't been for a long long time, and its high time someone started kicking some asses.

Yeah, I'm familiar with that industry to some extent. If you're not specializing in coated glass then it's going to be a bumpy future.
That sucks to hear though. I hope Trump gets in office and makes good on his promises.

We're one of the bigger companies in the country and luckily were able to take the hits of the last few years. My division specifically is pretty much responsible for holding the company up, bringing in about 80% of the profit (looking at around 10m in this year, from under 1m average 5 years ago) and using under 10% of the employees. At one point in 09 we got down to about 20k or so in the bank, with paychecks due to go out in just a few days, was not pretty, but somehow we managed.

Ted Cruz just named Phil Gramm his economic advisor.

I don't even know what to say...

It's highly likely I've worked either with your suppliers or as your supplier, in that case. I'm not going to name drop any companies unless you want to discuss over PM.

I'm glad overall that there is still demand for particularly high quality glass. China still has issues competing on a technological front.
I have no doubt they bought up all our old machinery immediately after we decommissioned it, through a fake company if need be. It's not a coincidence that they're consistently a few years behind the curve. Nobody listened to my concerns when I brought up why were bothering to sell off our old shit to companies in Brazil or whatever, where American or German technology could be shilled at a premium.

Edit: I didn't even see that link. If this is true then I guess Ted Cruz is an even bigger fool than I originally figured.

The quality has been the saving grace. It among other things explains the price gap. We could sell chinese glass, and make a killing doing so, but we as a company refuse to lower the quality of the product we deliver, and our customers have come to expect that. Hell, we won't even take shortcuts on mounting curtain/window wall, even if we're working in a state that doesn't have strict rules in place (GA has no laws for some reason). Na I don't want to go into names or anything lol.

And yes... I don't know how I didn't catch that article earlier, its a bit old now, as far as the internet goes. I'm not sure how anyone supports him, no matter how anti-trump they are. "Trump is an unknown" isn't threatening enough to make me want to vote for that rat.

I read today that Trump has laid out a plan to get rid of the national debt within 8 years. The main proposal is selling off government assets (real estate, energy resources, abandoned property/buildings, etc...)

I actually think it's a great idea. However, many economists don't see it happening.

Thoughts?

It's probably the single best demonstration of how (and why) Donald Trump has literally zero understanding of public policy that he's ever offered over the whole campaign. I'm glad he said it because if it wasn't beyond obvious before, it is now that he has absolutely no earthly idea what he's talking about. He thinks he can make $19.5 trillion+ disappear in 8 years, essentially running a $2.4 trillion surplus in each year of his presidency, without touching Social Security, spending more on the military, and pushing through that moronic tax plan that redistributes wealth upward to billionaires.

The numbers simply don't work even without all the other bullshit he wants to do. We don't conduct that much trade and we couldn't under any circumstances; even if Donald Trump was able to wave his magical Donald Trump wand and get all those "magical Donald Trump deals" that wouldn't actually exist in reality that would roll back the effects of globalization, there isn't enough volume. We don't have that many "assets." This whole plan, and Trump's total ignorance of policy, is even funnier when you consider the adjusted interest rate on bonds. That means that this is literally the exact wrong strategy to pursue in this climate given the nature of our assets, the amount of deficit reduction that Obama et al. have already been responsible for, and the needs of both our country and of foreign investors.

COMPELLING MEXICO TO PAY FOR THE WALL

You do realize that Mexico will never, ever pay for a wall that keeps immigrants from Central American countries in Mexico, right?

I realize most people who support Donald Trump don't actually know that the relatively few immigrants crossing the southern border (in relation to pre-2007 levels when this was a real problem, unlike now) are not from Mexico, because they don't understand policy, but that really is a crucial detail that really does sink this already-thin and stupid idea. Mexico doesn't have any national interest in keeping undocumented immigrants from other countries in Mexico, which is what would happen if they further improved border security along our southern border.

I use that term specifically, began net illegal migration over that border is negative and has been for years. It's only a problem in Donald Trump's head.

Trump could make about three phone calls and Mexico would not only pay for the wall, they'd build it themselves on the double.

The only reason we get bled dry is because Moneygram and Wells Fargo let it happen.

Lying economists have been doing mental gymnastics for decades trying to explain why billions in remittances that are sent to Mexico are great for the US economy. It's a bigger moneymaker in Mexico than oil. Not that any of those dipshit economists have a clue what they're talking about, most of them would run a hotdog stand into the ground.
