I read today that Trump has laid out a plan to get rid of the national debt within 8 years. The main proposal is selling off government assets (real estate, energy resources, abandoned property/buildings, etc...)
I actually think it's a great idea. However, many economists don't see it happening.
Thoughts?
It's probably the single best demonstration of how (and why) Donald Trump has literally
zero understanding of public policy that he's ever offered over the whole campaign. I'm glad he said it because if it wasn't beyond obvious before, it is now that he has absolutely no earthly idea what he's talking about. He thinks he can make $19.5 trillion+ disappear in 8 years,
essentially running a $2.4 trillion surplus in each year of his presidency, without touching Social Security, spending more on the military, and pushing through that moronic tax plan that redistributes wealth upward to billionaires.
The numbers simply don't work even without all the other bullshit he wants to do. We don't conduct that much trade and we couldn't under any circumstances; even if Donald Trump was able to wave his magical Donald Trump wand and get all those "magical Donald Trump deals" that wouldn't actually exist in reality that would roll back the effects of globalization, there isn't enough volume. We don't have that many "assets." This whole plan, and Trump's total ignorance of policy, is even funnier when you consider the adjusted interest rate on bonds. That means that this is literally the
exact wrong strategy to pursue in this climate given the nature of our assets, the amount of deficit reduction that Obama et al. have already been responsible for, and the needs of both our country and of foreign investors.

You do realize that Mexico will never, ever pay for a wall that keeps
immigrants from Central American countries in Mexico, right?
I realize most people who support Donald Trump don't actually know that the relatively few immigrants crossing the southern border (in relation to pre-2007 levels when this was a real problem, unlike now) are not from Mexico, because they don't understand policy, but that really is a crucial detail that really does sink this already-thin and stupid idea. Mexico doesn't have any national interest in keeping undocumented immigrants
from other countries in Mexico, which is what would happen if they
further improved border security along our southern border.
I use that term specifically, began net illegal migration over that border is negative and has been for years. It's only a problem in Donald Trump's head.
