adjusted for population size on a county level, shaded on a nonlinear color scale to show winning margins:

note how LA county alone has a higher population than 42 individual states.

this map is more accurate in that it reflects the competitiveness of the 2016 race.

for comparison, a county-level map of the 2008 race without adjustment for population:

highly misleading since no one would guess from this map alone that 2008 was a blue landslide victory.
