The VAST majority of abortions in the US happen before 5 months. The remaining 1% that happen after the second trimester are generally a case where a fetal abnormality incompatible with life is identified, or the life of the mother is danger. The government has no business inside the doctors office where women, their family and their doctors are making hard, painful decisions.

The question that comes to mind that if it is indeed a simple conclusion that "abortion = murder", do you think that we should treat it as murder? If yes, I pose the following:

If I made my intention clear to murder someone, law enforcement would proactively seek to intervene up to the point of physically restraining me once that intention is made clear. So, if someone makes it clear that they intend to abort their pregnancy, and we live in a world where abortion is treated as murder, what do you propose we do? This, to me, is the crux of the debate as pro-life individuals end up spending a majority of the debate arguing the moral/ethical merits (understandably) without articulating the practical application of their view.

I'd rather the government make contraception free and readily available for everyone, and then either reduce the number of weeks allowed or outlaw abortion altogether. Invest heavily in orphanages and foster care services to take in babies from disadvantaged backgrounds, whose parents would have aborted them for economic reasons. If the state does this, they're ensuring that no one has a (subjectively) good reason to have an abortion, unless the mother's life is in danger or there are serious health defects present.

Then I think practically you could impose harsh sentences on those who still try to get illegal abortions.
