Trump had a disastrous week with the shitshow debate and his covid infection. During this time, I felt morale on the Republican side getting low, and more and more people were adopting a doomer mindset. There was a real danger that turnout from the MAGA base (the marginal voters who only come out of the woodwork for Trump, but not for generic R's) would crater. A story like this, which reminds them of what they're fighting for and what's at stake, should help counterbalance this trend. Just like the ACB hearings.
It might not be enough to get Trump reelected, but it helps stopping the bottom from falling out, and should increase the chances of denying Dems a trifecta.
