I've seen this opinion on twitter and largely agree with it.

Tariffs with vast majority of countries will be negotiated and come down drastically. 3 months from now most will follow the Vietnam route and we will remove if not all, at least the excess to the 10%. Even with Canada/EU/Mexico there will be some understanding i believe.

China is different though. They are a geopolitical enemy and this is absolutely an economic nuke we've just lobbed at them. I don't see a kinetic war being fought, i do see an economic war being unleashed on them though. We're trying very hard to reshape supply chains out of China and it's the right thing to do from a national security interest.

Imagine tomorrow China is taking over Taiwan, wtf can we do when so much of what we need comes from China? Rare earths and other critical inputs, we wouldn't be able to do anything about it simply because our own country is so dependent on them. So what happened during his first admin a lot of companies were incentivized to move to Vietnam, Bangladesh, etc. But even so, i think the move now is move those supply chains even closer as China has a huge influence in those SE Asia countries.

You two assume Trump is having a grand complicated plan and the tariffs are just means in his big game of 5d chess - what makes you think that?

When has he ever had a big plan in politics that came together by some complicated puzzle?

He has talked about all of these issues for many years though. You can find interviews from 30 years ago of him talking about trade imbalance and tariffs. This wasn't cooked up after he woke up on the wrong side of his bed recently.

I'm not saying his plan is great or perfect, but he knows what he's doing even if you don't agree.

More recently he also talked about getting prices down day 1, injecting bleach to cure COVID, immigrants eating cats and dogs and whatever comes to his mind this second.

He might have had some opinions that made sense 30 years ago, do you think he is still coherent enough for a huge plan like this being close to 80?

In an academical sense it is very much confirmed that he is indeed dumb. He might have a good sense for business and clearly found a great way to influence rubes, but he is not some genius like some of the other very unlikeable billionaires very much might be.

I listened to long form interviews with Bessent (sec of treasury) and Lutnick (sec of commerce) recently, two highly successful business people that made a lot of money in their private careers and know what they are talking about.

It was very insightful and i trust their expertise. The fact that you're peddling nonsense like injecting bleach is pretty telling about your ability to discern.

To me it for sure sounded like he wanted to inject disinfectants, but apparently that's not how to interpret that.

But I am willing to concede that he didn't mean that at the time and just couldn't form his thoughts in a coherent way, still can hardly see the same old guy having a great geopolitcal plan 5 years later. Time will tell I guess
