A federal registry makes sense, but what would it accomplish? The buying and selling of guns privately doesn't really matter either. If I buy a gun legally from a shop, and then turn it around and sell it to someone for cash - no one will ever know. Unless that gun shows up in a criminal act.

Guns and other things are similar in some ways and different in others.

The intended or designed purpose of an item is not a valid reason to pompously reject analogies between things.

the killing of people was the common theme while comparing guns to trucks. the fact that one item is designed and optimised to do just that, while the other one is not, IS a valid reason to reject that silly talking point.
