Fine. So how would this work in terms of immigration? Unlike physical belongings, immigration status is effectively binary: you're either allowed to stay in the US, or you don't. If unauthorized border crossings were "decriminalized, but not made legal", what would happen to those who are caught?
Also note that those are all academic questions. In reality, the actions of the Biden admin speak louder than words: highest level of crossings on the Southern border on record, suing against attempts from states like Texast to protect their borders by their own, etc.
they'd still be deported and thats it. as it is now, they are deported and also sometimes tried in court (which is expensive) and subsequently jailed in this country (which is also expensive).
my question to you is, would you rather spend hundreds of millions of dollars to tie up our judicial system and inundate our jails with immigrants or would you rather just deport them?
these arent academic questions, these are basic questions you should ask if you dont understand how the process works
the reason there are a lot of border crossing attempts these days isnt because of US policy, its because of whats going on in the countries south of Mexico
as for the death traps that Abbott laid out, his own federal district judge ordered their removal because he implemented everything without federal authorization.
if you want to get constitutional about it, i'd argue its inhumane honestly. Abbott is a fucking psychopath
